The Citizenship Academy

What is it all about??

To find out what the students thought of the each part of the course read on

Jenny a graduate of the academy talks about the first two days of the course.

What is active citizenship????

On the first day we looked at what we thought an active citizen was. We talked about the things we did in our local community. Then we talked about what we would like to be more involved in and some of the barriers why we could n't do the things we wanted to. In groups we thought of ideas of how to change things so we could be more involved.

How did you feel about joining the academy?

I was nervous about joining the group as apart from Amy I didn't think I would know anyone. Also I wasn't what all the topic on the course were about. I came on the first day with a volunteer but by the second day I was confident enough to go by myself. By day two I was really looking forward to the next sessions.

Day 2 was all about knowing your rights.

We talked about the Disability Discrimination Act and different people's experiences of barriers in society. We found out some of the people you could talk to for advice to make changes to your life. A lady from the Citizens Advice Bureau came in to talk to us about what they do.

What did you enjoy most about the first two days?

I was learning something new that I really enjoyed. I liked having time to spend with others in the group talking about their experiences.
